Let them eat cake
London, 29 April 2011. Trafalgar Square - tens of thousands Royal Wedding fans from all over the world celebrate the newlyweds. Piccadilly Circus - around 1,000 republicans put up a street party to raise awareness for their cause. Only a few hundred metres apart, two dramatically different planets.
The Royal Wedding is the excuse to stop people in the streets. To ask them questions. To make them think. Music, games, food, laughter. Anything it takes to draw a tiny bit of attention on what they call "democracy and people-power rather than inherited privilege". It's the paradox of republicans in the UK - speaking about a republic is only possible when the monarchy is in the spotlight.
